Motorised ICU Bed
Hospital beds move via mechanical or electrical means. The new models are easy to use and have controls handy for bed dwelling patients.
ICU Bed Specifications
The Department of Health and Social Care does states that each bed space in an ICU should include:
“An electric bed capable of attaining chair and Trendelenberg positions, and fitted with a pressure-relieving mattress.”
So, these guidelines specify three requirements for ICU beds:
-
Must be electric – can be operated using a handset or control panel rather requiring medical staff to reposition the bed manually.
-
Must offer cardiac chair and Trendelenberg positioning functions – these positions facilitate respiration and circulation to aid bodily function. Read more about the Trendenlenberg position and why it’s used.
-
Can accommodate a pressure-relieving mattress – foam or replacement air mattresses are used for pressure relief. ICU beds must have appropriate dimensions to fit these mattresses.

Features of Motorised ICU Beds
-Hospital Beds Raise, Lower, Elevate, and Recline
There are differences in functionality among different bed models. But, most hospital beds are capable of a variety of movements. If your loved one has reduced balance and mobility, you want to ensure he has his feet firmly planted on the ground before he tries to stand. You can lower or raise a hospital bed so your loved one can stand safely. Hospital beds make the safe use of walkers and wheelchairs easier. Hospital beds Elevate and recline. For patients who have difficulty sleeping on flat mattresses, hospital beds can adjust to create a comfortable sleeping space. Sometimes patients need to elevate legs and feet for health reasons.
-Hospital Beds are Good for Caregivers
Hospital beds support good care technique. Caregivers can control the position of hospital beds. Caregivers are better positioned to offer support in back healthy positions. They are less likely to bend and stoop while providing assistance. Hospital beds make caring for your loved one’s personal needs easier.
Hospital beds often have rails that may give your loved one something to hold onto. Even if your loved one is non-ambulatory he may have upper body strength. He can use his arms to help with rolling and repositioning.
-Hospital Beds are Small and Mobile
While it may be an adjustment to move from a large bed to a hospital bed, often the reduced bed size makes manoeuvring in the room safer. Wheelchairs and lifts require quite a bit of space to use and position correctly. Hospital beds may have wheels for easy movement. If your loved one is bed-bound, a hospital bed makes changing scenery easier.
-Hospital Beds are Accessorizable
Hospital beds rails offer great handholds. They also protect people from rolling off the sides. While you would never want to restrain someone in bed rails are great reminders for people who need help in and out of bed. Bed rails can be attached on the entire length of the bed, or half rails can attach near the top of the bed. These rails are great for getting in and out of bed and usually don’t get in the way of getting in and out of bed
-Better Positioning for Patients
When people are forced to spend extended periods of time in bed, the pressure that their body places on the bed causes a lot of heat that becomes trapped between the person’s clothing, bed and skin that will cause pressure sores or bed sores. These sores are extremely uncomfortable and difficult to manage. Hospital beds will often be recommended as an alternative so that they can reposition their body with ease to rotate themselves and displace the pressure throughout the body to alleviate soreness.
-Injury or Lack of Mobility
With certain injuries or surgeries, people will temporarily or permanently lose some of their mobility. Oftentimes, people will have their bedrooms on the second floor and climbing the stairs is too difficult to do post-surgery or with some injuries. Hospital Bed Rentals provide a convenient, temporary option to allow you to sleep on the ground level and make getting in and out of bed easier with less pain. People who are going through or recovering from abdominal surgeries, back surgeries or pregnancy often rent hospital beds as it allows them to sleep comfortably at an angle or position that is not painful for them and allows them to get in and out of bed on their own.
-Improved Circulation
Hospital beds allow users to alter and adjust the bed to better position their head and feet. These changes allow for movement as well as a periodic change to the pressure points on the body, thereby improving the patient’s blood circulation while she/he is in bed.
-Safety
Hospital Beds often become a necessity for people with conditions that require caregiver monitoring and attention or occasional restraint from falling. People who are at risk of falling, like those with dementia or cognitive impairment will many times require a hospital bed for the use of half rails to keep them in the bed. The half rails are adjustable to slide up and down out of the way, designed to keep people in bed or provide a stable and secure item to assist getting out of bed.
-Transferring
One of the most significant benefits of hospital beds is the ease of transferring. Hospital beds allow the caregiver to raise or lower the bed to a height that makes transferring the patient to a seated position, chair, wheelchair, or walker easier and reduce pain. Those with hip pain, lower back injury or pain, and some surgeries make moving and getting in and out of bed painful. The fully electric hospital bed and its ability to raise or lower makes getting in and out on one's own much easier.

4 Important Features for ICU Beds
Following is a quick and short checklist for you to see if a motorised ICU bed - will comfort your patient. Most ICU beds will also include the following four features:
CPR RELEASE
In an emergency being able to create flat, hard surface needed to perform CPR (Cardiopulmonary resuscitation).
Most intensive care doctors and nurses would consider CPR release as an essential for ICU beds. This function allows medical teams to flatten the bed platform at the push of a button or lever.
IV POLES WITH HOOKS
IV poles are used to securely hang fluids or medications that a patient needs to have administered via a drip. They typically have 2 or 4 hooks which can each support a fluid container. Having an IV pole with multiple hooks is beneficial in ICUs where patients will often require multiple medications at once.
Choosing an ICU bed with an IV pole included makes it easier to move a patient in an emergency. Rather than having to wheel both the bed and the IV pole, medical staff only have to focus on moving one piece of equipment. This reduces the risk of injury or damage to the IV supply.
REMOVABLE HEAD AND FOOTBOARDS
Beds with removable head and footboards, which lock safely into place when in use, are often preferred in ICUs.
There are two key benefits to this design:
-
In an emergency scenario, removing the headboard allows medical staff to stand behind the patient. This frees up more space to work around the patient and provides easier access to the head to support breathing.
-
It’s easier to perform prone positioning. This procedure involves rotating a patient from lying face up to face down.
Intermittent prone positioning has been shown to improve external respiration and improve/prevent acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) in critical care patients.
NURSE CONTROLS
Electric ICU beds can have several different options for controls. Some have a patient handset or patient controls built into the siderail. Others have a nurse control handset or nursing controls built into the base of the footboard. Often, there will be a combination of controls available on a single bed.
For ICU beds, having built-in nurse controls offers several benefits:
-
Nursing controls can lock functions on any patient handsets. This will protect a vulnerable patient who cannot operate the bed themselves from accidents.
-
There are no trailing wires which can cause a trip hazard when staff are rushing to assist during an emergency.
-
There’s no risk of controls getting lost. ICUs are busy places. If staff need the bed to perform a function, they can activate it immediately without having to locate a handset.
-
Bed accessories, such as weighing scales, can be incorporated. This helps to monitor the weight of patients who are too unwell to sit or stand to be weighed.
